A pox on software companies that lock customers in

We have been trying to help a small newsagent who purchased their software a while back and who wants to keep using it the way it is without having to pay any more money. His software company is demanding an annual fee just so he can access the software.
We think this sucks.
The software was not sold with a condition that annual support had to be paid. This came later. Now, this small newsagent either pays the fee or pays to switch to us where he will have no such compulsory access fee.
Some software companies suck at fairness and show little understanding of the challenges faced by small business operators. This behaviour is grossly unfair.
